Processing a Medicare Claim via the Tyro Health EFTPOS Integration
Updated over a week ago

Medicare claims submitted via Tyro EFTPOS terminals are referred to as Medicare Easyclaim. Processing a Patient Claim via Tyro EFTPOS requires the patient to have a savings/debit card. Click here to learn more about the differences between Medicare claiming via Tyro EFTPOS and Tyro Health Online.

Configuring Item Codes to enable Medicare claiming

For an Item Code to be claimed through Medicare via the Tyro terminal, it must first be enabled as a Medicare Item.

From your list of available Item Codes, click on an item to open its settings.

You can now Edit this item code, and under the Claiming Options, enable the Medicare Item option.

If required, an Override Code can be entered if you need to submit a different code when processing a claim. This is only necessary if your Item Code is not already a valid Medicare code.

Submitting a Medicare Bulk Bill Claim via Tyro EFTPOS

Bulk bill claims can be submitted via the Tyro terminal. Once approved, claims will be paid to you by Medicare, and they need to be manually paid off in PracSuite. To avoid having to manually pay off approved bulk bill claims once paid to you, consider using the Tyro Health Online integration.

Applying any type of payment to a bulk-billed item will prevent you from submitting a bulk-bill claim. If the bulk bill button doesn't appear, ensure that you have not applied a payment to the item.

If you accept a gap payment or full payment from the patient, you cannot bulk bill, and you must submit a patient claim instead.

After adding a Medicare item to an invoice, the Tyro EFTPOS button will appear.

Select the Medicare Bulk Bill option.

The Medicare details and referral details stored on the patient file will be displayed.

The '+' icon to the left of each item allows you to submit additional information with the claim.

The Tyro popup window will appear. Step through the prompts accordingly.

A popup will appear in PracSuite to summarise the status of the claim. Again, once successful claims are paid to you by Medicare, they need to be manually paid off in PracSuite.

Submitting a Medicare Patient Claim via Tyro EFTPOS

Medicare Patient Claims can be submitted via the Tyro Health EFTPOS integration.

Patient Claims with full upfront payment
If you submit a Patient Claim with full up-front payment, the patient will be asked to swipe their savings/debit card to receive the rebate back immediately. Ensure you fully pay off the item in PracSuite before selecting the 'Medicare Patient Claim' option to achieve this result. If a patient doesn't have a savings/debit card, you will not be able to proceed with the claim.

Patient Claims with no or partial upfront payment

If you submit a Patient Claim without full up-front payment, the patient will receive a cheque from Medicare, which they will need to return to the business as payment for the service. This also applies if the patient has made a partial payment that doesn't cover the full service cost.

Considering the additional impost to the patient to return the cheque to the practice, it is highly encouraged to accept full upfront payment so that you can process the rebate to the patient's savings/debit card immediately. As an alternative, businesses can consider using the Tyro Health Online integration to submit patient claims where the rebate is paid back into the patient's Medicare-registered bank account.

This article will step through claiming for a Medicare item that has been fully paid upfront.

After adding a Medicare item to an invoice, accept full payment via any payment method.

Once you have accepted full payment, the Tyro EFTPOS button will appear.

Select the Medicare Patient Claim option.

The Medicare details and referral details stored on the patient file will be displayed. Review these as required.

If submitting a claim for a child, enter the alternate claimant details for the individual receiving the rebate from Medicare.

Select Submit to begin the process. You will be stepped through submitting the claim, including swiping the patient's debit/saving cards to receive the rebate if the patient has paid up-front.

The patient must have a debit/savings card to receive the rebate when processing an Easyclaim via Tyro EFTPOS. If a patient doesn't have a savings/debit card, you will not be able to proceed with the claim.

As an alternative method of claiming, you can consider using the Tyro Health Online integration to submit patient claims where the rebate is paid back into the patient's Medicare-registered bank account instead of a savings/debit card.

Once complete, you will receive confirmation of the benefit in PracSuite.
