A Medicare Patient Claim results in the rebate being paid back to the patient or claimant after the patient has made payment in full for the Medicare fee plus any potential gap charged by the practice.

If you do not accept full payment from the patient, Medicare will send a cheque for the rebate to the patient, who must return the cheque to the practice. Click here to learn more about this.

Before Submitting a Medicare Claim

Before claiming, check that you have:

To begin, add a Medicare item to the invoice.

If you are using a Tyro EFTPOS terminal or other payment terminal, including cash, ensure you add full payment to the invoice before proceeding with the claim. If you are using Tyro Health Online to process online payments, you can skip this step.

After accepting full payment and adding it to the invoice, select the Medicare Patient Claim button in the Tyro Online menu to start the claiming process.

If multiple alternate claimants are listed on the patient file, you will be asked to select which claimant to associate with the claim and receive the rebate.

The Tyro Online popup will appear to preview the claim and give you the option to verify card details.

You will see a confirmation of whether the patient or someone else (aka the alternate claimant) will receive the rebate. For information on how to set up an alternate claimant, click here.

You will also see a summary of the referral and the items being claimed.

Click Continue to Payment.

The final step of the claiming process is to confirm how the patient will be paying in full for the service.

If you have accepted payment via cash or a payment terminal in the practice, simply hit Submit to finalise the process.

If you are using Tyro Health Online to accept the payment, you can:

  • Enter Card Details - (By obtaining consent from the patient, you can save their card details for future use).

  • SMS To Patient - Sends an SMS containing a link for the patient to pay on their own device with their credit card details or using Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • Create Link - Generates a link that can be manually sent to the patient.

After finalising your payment method selections, click Submit to finalise the claiming process.

for Medicare claims submitted via Tyro Health Online, patients will generally receive the rebate in their nominated bank account within 48 hours of submission.
